The new movie opens with the surgery scene, the moment where the evil megacorporation rips the brain out of, ahem, Mira Killian and places it into JohannsenвЂ™s body. This version of the story takes the elements of the classic manga and anime and remixes them to tell a superhero origin story revolving around Major Mira Killian. This big-budget Hollywood Ghost in the Shell obsesses over MajorвЂ™s origins. ItвЂ™s just the way she is and rarely, with only a few exceptions, does the story focus on her origin. Major is a cyborg - a human brain embedded in a robot body. In all iterations, the story revolves around bad-ass supercop Major Motoko Kusanagi as she enforces hard law in a cyberpunk future. Ghost in the Shell takes place in just such a future. ItвЂ™ll come to the virtual space well before the physical one but it will come. In the future, itвЂ™s possible weвЂ™ll all be able to customize our gender, race and body morphology. Hell, thereвЂ™s a strong argument that the 1995 filmвЂ™s hero is transgender or, at the least, genderfluid. In the anime, the human soul flows from shell to shell, shedding and trading identities. The original manga from 1989 and classic anime film from 1995 play with identity. Ghost in the ShellвЂ™s whitewashing is less overt. Whitewashing is an old Hollywood tradition. Slap some bad makeup on a famous actor and pass them off as Asian.
